An online teaching role can mean employment by a school, freelance lessons through a marketplace or conversation practice on a platform. These arrangements have different requirements and risks. A platform list should not be treated as a ranking of the highest pay or proof that applications are open in every country.
Compare three routes
School or education-provider employment
Read the actual vacancy for required qualifications, teaching registration, work location, safeguarding checks and working hours. A teaching certificate accepted in one jurisdiction may not authorize work elsewhere. Confirm whether preparation, meetings and training are included in paid hours.
A lesson marketplace
A marketplace may let teachers offer particular languages or subjects, subject to its application rules. Check the official italki teacher portal for the current application process, language availability, category requirements and fees. Do not assume that any person can join immediately or that setting a high lesson price produces bookings.
Conversation tutoring
The Cambly application guidance states that applicants must be native English speakers and at least 18; a teaching certificate or prior experience is not required to apply under that guidance. Those are application criteria, not a hiring guarantee. Check current intake limits and technical requirements on the official site.
Check the conditions before comparing advertised rates
- Are you paid per scheduled lesson, completed lesson or connected minute?
- Are preparation, waiting, cancellations and administrative work paid?
- What commission, payment or currency-conversion charges apply?
- Which country and tax or work-authorization rules apply to you?
- Are minimum hours, equipment or exclusivity required?
- What happens if a student cancels or the connection fails?
Calculate an effective hourly amount
Hypothetical example: a 45-minute lesson pays $18, and preparation plus administration takes another 30 minutes. Total work time is 75 minutes, so earnings are $14.40 per hour before fees, equipment, tax and other expenses. If a platform then deducts a fee, take that out before calculating your own net amount.
Use actual booked and paid sessions, not an assumed full calendar. Student demand can vary, and a high headline rate may accompany substantial unpaid time.
Prepare evidence suited to the role
Create a short teaching sample, list relevant subjects and qualifications honestly and explain how you handle lessons and feedback. Protect student information. For roles involving minors, confirm the required safeguarding procedures and checks rather than relying on a generic platform profile.
Verify the offer and plan for irregular income
Apply through an independently verified employer or platform domain. A demand to send money back from a deposited check or pay for guaranteed hiring is a warning sign; review the FTC job-scam guidance.
