International Money Transfer Services: Compare Four Providers

An international transfer moves money between people or accounts in different countries. Banks and specialist providers use different payment networks, so the process is not always one bank directly wiring another. The best option depends on the sending country, destination, amount, funding method and how the recipient can collect the money.

Compare the amount received, not only the fee

Check the service fee, exchange rate, possible intermediary charges and the recipient payout. A provider advertising a zero transfer fee can still earn money through the exchange rate. Availability and identification requirements also vary by route.

Illustrative comparison: with a fixed $200 total budget, provider A charges $4 and converts $196 at 17 destination units per dollar, producing 3,332 units. Provider B charges $1 and converts $199 at 16.6, producing 3,303.4 units. The lower headline fee does not produce the larger payout. These are invented rates for arithmetic, not live quotes.

Four providers to research

This is a shortlist for comparison, not a tested ranking or an assurance that every service supports your country.

Wise

Use the official Wise quote to check supported currencies, the fee and estimated delivery. Confirm whether the route pays into a bank account and whether account features are available where you live. A convenient app does not remove identity checks or all sharing of transaction information.

PayPal

Check the PayPal money-sending information for the applicable country. Wallet payments, currency conversion, withdrawals and associated transfer services can have different costs. Do not assume a recipient can withdraw locally simply because they can create an account.

MoneyGram

Check MoneyGram for route-specific bank, wallet or collection options. Verify the collection location, recipient identification and the deadline before paying.

Western Union

Use Western Union to compare the available funding and payout methods. An agent service and an online transfer may quote different prices and arrival estimates.

Bank details and security

An IBAN identifies an account where that system is used; a BIC or SWIFT code identifies a financial institution. They are not interchangeable. Obtain the required details directly from the intended recipient through a trusted channel. Never guess account numbers or reuse details from an unexpected message.

A bank transfer is not inherently unsafe, and an app does not guarantee anonymity. Do not disclose passwords, one-time codes or online-banking access to someone claiming they need them to receive a transfer.

Before you confirm

  1. Verify the recipient independently, especially after any change in payment instructions.
  2. Compare quotes for the same total budget and delivery method.
  3. Read the estimated arrival time and any conditions; instant delivery is not universal.
  4. Save the receipt, reference number and support information.
  5. Check cancellation and error-resolution rights that apply to your transfer.

For qualifying U.S. remittances, start with the CFPB international money-transfer guidance. Rules elsewhere differ. Our safe overseas transfer guide covers fraud checks, while comparing transfer methods helps evaluate the route.
